Metformin Low Blood Sugar

Metformin is a common diabetes medication. I was prescribed Metformin when I first was diagnosed with diabetes. Metformin is a cheap medication, available as a generic, and it works very well for many people with Type 2 Diabetes.

For people with LADA Diabetes, Metformin may work initially to lower blood glucose levels, but as LADA progresses, the body makes less insulin, and treatment with insulin is necessary.

When I was first diagnosed, I was treated like someone with Type 2 Diabetes. I was misdiagnosed. This is common for people with LADA. You can read my LADA Diabetes story here.

The point of this post is to tell you that YES metformin CAN cause low blood glucose (hypoglycemia). I definitely had it happen to me. Yes, it was often in combination with exercise.

I had an insulin blood test which came back bellow the normal range. I have other autoimmune disease too. Currently taking metformin as I was told that it was PCOS which is probably not because I am thin. Metformin made me feel better the first 2 weeks followed by extreme hunger, thirst and leg swelling. I am wondering how useful metformin is for LADA or potentially dangerous?

    • Extreme thirst could be a sign that your blood glucose is high. Have you tested? Metformin helped me at first but over time it stopped working and I needed insulin.
