One aspect of my health that has been a struggle is gum health. There is a connection between diabetes and gum disease, such as gingivitis or periodontitis, with symptoms like bleeding and painful gums. As the WebMD article on Diabetes and Oral Health explains, high blood sugar causes more plaque build up which leads to gum disease. That article also explains that the connection also goes in the other direction, as having gum disease can also make diabetes worse. ☹
So, like many people with diabetes, I went to my dentist and got the bad news that I have a lot of plaque build up, gingivitis, and periodontal pockets. I had to have a deep cleaning (scaling) to remove the plaque and was instructed that I needed to stay on top of my at home care: brush my teeth twice a day, floss, and use a water flosser.
After a series of visits to see my dental hygienist, I completed the deep cleaning. And, as instructed, I improved my home dental care. I bought a Waterpik. I also switched to an alcohol free mouthwash.
I did all of the above, but I continued to have bleeding gums. It actually got worse than just bleeding while brushing. I got a sore on my gums that was painful. Out of desperation, I bought some Colgate Peroxyl Antiseptic Mouthwash which made it feel better right away! I also took an oral medication to treat that. The sore healed up. However, the Peroxyl mouthwash (which contains Hydrogen peroxide) is only supposed to be used temporarily to help with healing of oral sores.
While the sore healed up, I still had issues with bleeding gums, so I started to explore related products.
Finding Aloe Vera Mouthwash

I feel like I lucked out, because the next product I purchased was The Natural Dentist Healthy Gums Mouth Wash, which has been a big success!
I’ve been using the Natural Dentist mouth wash for about two months now. I rinse with it twice a day. It has no stinging sensation. No foaming. I use the peppermint flavor and I think it tastes ok. I rinse for 30 seconds each time. My gums don’t bleed any longer.

I was so impressed with it after just a couple of weeks that I started to tell people about it.
My colleague said, “My gums hate me.”
I told her to try The Natural Dentist Mouth Wash.
She had a similar experience as me. She went to the dentist and did all of the homecare that the dental hygienist recommended, but still had poor gum health.
Going back to the dentist had become associated with feelings of failure… But she was doing everything correctly, just like me.
Gum disease can still happen, even when following excellent mouth hygiene practices. Brushing and flossing are super important, and a water flosser really helps too. But if you do all of that and still have issues, it’s not your fault!
I’ve been buying this mouth wash on Amazon as a subscribe and save reoccurring order, but it looks like The Natural Dentist is widely available at pharmacies and stores that carry health products, so hopefully you can find it at your preferred store and give it a try!

The Evidence for Aloe Vera Mouth Wash
The Natural Dentist mouth wash has 20% Aloe Vera. I did some research and found that Aloe Vera mouthwash has been studied in six randomized trials. It was been found to be at least equally effective as chlorhexidine, which is a prescription mouthwash. Here are some studies on it:
- Efficacy of aloe vera mouthwash versus chlorhexidine on plaque and gingivitis: A systematic review Review article published in the International Journal of Dental Hygiene in March 2019. Reviews six randomized clinical trials.
- Aloe vera: It’s effect on gingivitis This study found that gingival inflammation was reduced the most in the group of people that used aloe vera mouthwash plus scaling versus either treatment by itself.
- Effect of Aloe vera mouthwash on periodontal health: triple blind randomized control trial This study showed that Aloe Vera was as effective as Chlorhexidine and with no side effects.
